The Paddle Honesty Index: Claimed vs. Independently Measured Specs

Manufacturers print a weight on the box and call it a spec sheet. But the number that actually decides how a paddle plays — swing weight — almost never appears on the packaging. The Paddle Honesty Index compiles what independent labs actually measure, next to what brands claim, and tells you where the two diverge.

Our method — the honest version. Every figure below comes from a named independent testing lab that measures paddles in-house on calibrated equipment — not from a manufacturer’s marketing. Where a spec isn’t published or independently measured, we mark it — (not published) rather than guess. Static weight is what’s on the box; swing weight, twist weight, and spin RPM are measured. We update figures as new lab data appears.

Finding 1 — The spec they hide decides everything

Static weight (the box number) is the least useful spec for predicting how a paddle plays. Two paddles that both read “7.8–8.0 oz” on the box can feel a world apart in the hand. Example, both from JOOLA, both measured by the same lab:

JOOLA Perseus 14mm — swing weight 112 (quick, maneuverable).
JOOLA Hyperion 16mm — swing weight 127 (heavy, powerful).
Same brand, near-identical box weight — a 15-point gap in how heavy they actually feel to swing. None of that is on the packaging.

Finding 2 — Spin numbers depend on who’s testing

A single “RPM” figure in a marketing bullet is close to meaningless, because measured spin varies by tester and protocol. The Six Zero Double Black Diamond 16mm has been measured anywhere from 1,675 to 1,880 RPM across reputable labs. That’s why we report ranges and name the source rather than repeat one hero number.

Finding 3 — Sometimes the claim holds up

Honesty cuts both ways. CRBN’s foam-core TruFoam Genesis line is marketed as a high-spin paddle, and independent measurement backs it: 2,100+ RPM across all three shapes — genuinely rare. When a brand earns it, we say so.

Swing weight is a unitless index of how heavy a paddle feels through the swing; higher = more power and stability, lower = faster hands. Spin is measured RPM off a testing rig. “±0.2 oz” reflects normal unit-to-unit manufacturing variance — the paddle in your hand may not match the number on the box exactly.

How to read this

Ignore the box weight; look at swing weight

If you want faster hands at the net, aim lower (110–114). If you want put-away power and stability on off-center hits, aim higher (117–127). The static-weight number tells you almost nothing about that feel.

Treat single spin numbers with suspicion

If a product page shows one big RPM figure with no source, it’s marketing. Real spin lives in a range and depends on the tester. Anything measured above ~2,000 RPM by an independent lab is genuinely high.

Expect unit variance

A “7.9 oz” paddle can arrive anywhere in roughly a ±0.2 oz band. If exact weight matters to you, weigh yours on a kitchen scale that reads to 0.1 oz.
